Tomorrow Nifty PredictionMarket Outlook: Navigating Volatility as Indices Slip on October 14th — What to Expect on October 15th

Indian equity benchmark indices faced renewed downward pressure during a choppy trading session on October 14th, giving up a portion of their recent gains as profit booking took center stage. At the closing bell, the BSE Sensex settled lower by 251.89 points, or 0.34 percent, to stand at 72,781.89. Concurrently, the NSE Nifty 50 slipped 99.25 points, or 0.44 percent, to close at 22,622.70, falling below the crucial 22,650 mark.

Market participation reflected a relatively broad split across the broader market despite the weakness in frontline indices. Approximately 2,351 stocks advanced, 1,694 declined, and 129 remained unchanged. While benchmark indices traded under pressure, selective buying in heavyweights helped limit further downside. As Dalal Street heads toward the October 15th session, market participants are closely evaluating key technical support thresholds, macroeconomic data releases, and global cues to determine whether the pullback will extend or resume its upward trajectory.

Sectoral Performance and Stock Movers

The market landscape on October 14th was characterized by distinct sector rotation. Defensive pockets, technology, and select consumer stocks outperformed, while rate-sensitive and cyclical segments faced pronounced selling pressure.

Top Gainers and Laggards

  • Nifty Top Gainers: Infosys, Nestle, Tech Mahindra, Tata Consumer, and Coal India saw gains, supported by positive investor interest and encouraging underlying business updates.

  • Nifty Top Losers: Shriram Finance, HDFC Life, Bajaj Finserv, Bajaj Finance, and SBI Life Insurance were among the top losers on the Nifty, bearing the brunt of profit booking.

Sector Breakdown

  • The Bullish Pockets: Sectorally, IT, energy, oil and gas, media, and FMCG indices bucked the broader negative trend, gaining between 0.5 percent and 1 percent. Positive business updates from the IT and FMCG sectors, along with PSU banks, strengthened investor confidence in companies with strong earnings prospects and fundamentally solid positions, despite the broader macroeconomic challenges.

  • The Bearish Pockets: Conversely, automobile, metal, pharma, realty, and private banking sectors declined between 0.5 percent and 1.7 percent. The broader market indices also closed with marginal losses, as both the Nifty Midcap and Nifty Smallcap indices finished slightly lower.

Macroeconomic Drivers and Market Sentiment

Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments, noted that the Indian stock market witnessed volatility primarily due to profit booking following recent gains. Investor caution was heightened ahead of key US inflation data releases.

Despite the profit booking, market sentiment found underlying support from several macroeconomic developments:

  • Softening Crude Oil Prices: Intraday crude oil prices eased, reducing immediate cost pressures on oil-importing nations.

  • Currency Stability: The Indian rupee strengthened following foreign exchange-related measures implemented by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

  • Tax Review Expectations: Sentiment was further sustained by market expectations surrounding a possible review of the Long-Term Capital Gains (LTCG) tax and Securities Transaction Tax (STT).

However, domestic economic indicators presented headwinds. Weaker-than-expected domestic Wholesale Price Index (WPI) data pushed up bond yields. This rekindled concerns regarding a tighter monetary policy stance, putting notable pressure on rate-sensitive sectors such as automobiles, private banks, and metals. Nevertheless, positive business updates from IT, FMCG, and PSU banks reassured investors regarding strong earnings prospects in resilient companies.

Technical Outlook for Nifty 50 (October 15th)

Technical commentary highlights that the Nifty remains in a consolidation phase while holding above critical support zones.

Shrikant Chauhan’s Technical View

Shrikant Chauhan, Head of Equity Research at Kotak Neo, observed that profit booking occurred at higher levels in the benchmark indices. After a technically weak start, the Nifty faced resistance near 22,750 and declined sharply, forming a bearish candle on the daily chart.

Chauhan outlined key technical levels for upcoming sessions:

  • Support Levels: The 22,500 and 22,450 levels remain strong support zones for the Nifty. As long as the index holds above these levels, the ongoing pullback is likely to continue.

  • Resistance Levels: On the upside, 22,750–22,800 will act as a key resistance zone for bulls. A successful breakout above 22,800 could move the market toward 23,000.

  • Downside Risks: A drop below 22,450 could weaken the current uptrend, below which traders may consider exiting long positions.

Sudeep Shah’s Technical & Derivatives View

Sudeep Shah, Head of Technical and Derivatives Research at SBI Securities, noted that the Nifty traded within a narrow range of around 200 points on Wednesday—the tightest daily range seen in the last four sessions. Following the previous session’s short-covering rally, the index attempted to extend gains but failed to maintain momentum, ultimately closing down 0.43%.

Shah highlighted the following technical details:

  • Consolidation Trend: The Nifty has been consolidating for the last 11 trading sessions, fluctuating on both sides. On the daily timeframe, it formed a bearish-bodied candle with upward and downward wicks, reflecting uncertainty and a lack of clear direction amid persistent volatility.

  • Moving Averages & Oscillators: The Nifty is currently trading below its 20-day and 50-day Exponential Moving Averages (EMAs). However, the Relative Strength Index (RSI) has gradually improved from lower levels to around 40, while the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) signals a weakening of selling momentum.

  • Key Zones: Immediate support is identified at the 22,500–22,480 zone. A break below this could push downside momentum toward 22,330. Conversely, immediate resistance stands at 22,770–22,800; sustaining above this level could extend a pullback rally toward 22,950. Until a clear breakout occurs, the index is expected to remain range-bound.

Bank Nifty Outlook

Sudeep Shah provided key technical insights for the banking index as well:

  • Consolidation Pattern: Bank Nifty has been trading in a defined range for the past 13 trading sessions, signaling a lack of strong directional consensus. The index formed a small-bodied doji candle with upper and lower wicks and closed 0.30% lower, reflecting uncertainty at current levels.

  • Technical Indicators: Bank Nifty is trading below key EMAs, with both the RSI and MACD showing no significant movement, suggesting that consolidation will persist until a breakout happens.

  • Key Levels to Watch:

    • Support: The 54,900–54,800 levels act as immediate support. A break below this zone could trigger fresh selling toward 54,400.

    • Resistance: The 55,800–55,900 levels serve as immediate resistance. Sustained trading above this zone could extend the pullback toward 56,300.
